70-year-old man sentenced in child pornography case

A convicted sex offender is headed back to prison after authorities discovered sexually explicit images of minors on his computer, officials said.

William Greenfield, 70, of Cal-Nev-Ari, was sentenced Wednesday to 21 years, eight months in prison for possessing and trading child pornography online, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release. He pleaded guilty on May 23 to one count of transporting child pornography.

“Each time a person receives, views and downloads child pornography they re-victimize the children depicted in the images,” Daniel G. Bogden, U.S. attorney for the District of Nevada, said in the release. “For the sake of his many victims, the lengthy prison sentence is both warranted and justified.”

Greenfield was previously released on Nov. 8, 2011, after 37 months in prison for possessing and trading child pornography online, officials said. He was arrested again about a month later, officials said.

On Dec. 13, Metro Police traced pornographic images and videos of children to two Yahoo email accounts used at Greenfield’s Cal-Nev-Ari residence, the release said. A week later, on Dec. 20, police executed a search warrant and confiscated computers and digital devices. Police discovered more than 600 images and videos of child pornography obtained online on his computer, authorities said.

On March 14, Greenfield met his federal probation officer in Las Vegas, the release said. Greenfield told the officer that he had recently viewed child pornography and gave him access to his computer and Yahoo email account. The officer found a pornographic image of a child about 5 years old on the computer and reported it to the FBI, officials said.

With Greenfield’s permission, the FBI opened his Yahoo account and discovered child pornography transmitted to other people online between February and March, officials said.

The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nancy J. Koppe, the release said.
