Two killed, one hurt when car crashes into tree

Updated Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012 | 4:19 p.m.

Fatal crash

Two people died and one was injured in a single-car, rollover crash this morning in the northwest valley.

The crash occurred about 6:30 a.m. at the 6500 block of Centennial Center Boulevard, said Lt. Leslie Lane, a Metro watch commander. A Nissam 350Z was traveling east in front of Prestige Chrysler when it veered into the raised median, crashing into a palm tree.

Two men, the driver, 21, and one passenger, 19, were pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger, 22, was in critical condition and was taken to a hospital.

It is possible that the Nissan was racing a black sports car, police said.

Metro Police shut down traffic on Centennial Center Boulevard from Grand Montecito Parkway to Oso Blanca Road, said Lt. Leslie Lane, a Metro watch commander.

The crash is under investigation by Metro’s Accident Investigations section. Police are urging anyone with information about the black sports car to call Detective P. David Rooney at (702) 828-8189, leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555 or visit Crime Stoppers' website.

The fatalities are the 77th and 78th traffic-related fatalities in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2012.
