Fire at vacant downtown house possibly caused by transient

Burned house

Firefighters responded to a fire at 308 S. 10th St.

Two houses damaged by fire

A fire early Sunday at a vacant home in downtown Las Vegas might have been started by a homeless person.

Numerous calls were made around 4:30 a.m. about a fire at a one-story house at 308 S. 10th St., said Tim Szymanski, a spokesman for Las Vegas Fire & Rescue. By the time crews arrived, the fire had spread to the interior of the home and to a vacant house next door at 912 Bridger Ave.

Firefighters put out the flames in less than five minutes, Szymanski said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There are signs that a homeless person had been living between the houses, Szymanski said. It is possible that the person was cooking or smoking and had fallen asleep when the fire occurred, he said.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage.
