Letter to the editor:

Las Vegas can make streets safer

Regarding the editorial “Driving dangers,” the proposed fixes are like putting a Band-Aid on a gaping wound.

Many things can be done to make Las Vegas a safer place for drivers and pedestrians, including:

• Don’t allow right turns on red lights.

• Install cameras at all the dangerous intersections, catch red-light runners and speeders, and fine them.

• Move all bus stops back from the edge of the road — it’s a very scary place to wait for a bus.

• Enforce the no cellphone/texting law.

• Install proper crosswalks with traffic lights that force drivers to stop.

• Install walkways over busy streets where the distance is too far for people to cross safely.

Guess what? It works.

We all know we have laws that are never enforced. The above suggestions work in other developed countries where road safety is obviously more of a priority than here.

To suggest that out-of-state drivers are to blame is not true — look at all the fatalities and severe injuries this year. They are almost all from here.

It’s so sad to turn on the news every day and see this needless, and in most cases preventable, loss of life. If only someone would take charge and make some changes, we might see some lives saved.
