Woman in house fire hospitalized for smoke inhalation

An elderly woman was taken to the hospital after a Friday morning fire in Sun City Summerlin that destroyed most of her home, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue officials said.

Fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said firefighters responded at 7:11 a.m. to 2408 Keiser Court to find a woman in her 70s sitting on a chair on the sidewalk in front of the house covered in soot.

Szymanski said the woman, who lives alone, was treated on the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation and was transported to University Medical Center. She appeared to be doing well Friday afternoon, officials said.

Szymanski said one side of the single-story duplex where she lives, an area of about 1,500 square feet, was in flames when firefighters arrived.

“The fire was well advanced on arrival and the roof was starting to cave in,” Szymanski said.

He said the fire was out in 15 minutes and there were no other injuries. The fire, which caused about $175,000 damage, started in the attic and appears to be electrical in nature, officials said.
