Local hospital recognized for headache, stroke programs

St. Rose Dominican Hospital’s San Martín Campus announced Friday that its headache program, the only one in the U.S. certified by The Joint Commission, has earned the Gold Seal of Approval and it’s stroke program has been recognized as a primary stroke center.

San Martín joins the hospital group’s Siena campus as a primary stroke center. The headache program treats patients suffering from chronic headaches through medication.

“We are proud that our San Martín Campus has achieved these two very important distinctions,” said Rod Davis, president and CEO of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals and senior vice president of operations. “The certifications are exciting for our San Martín Campus because it means residents in southwest Las Vegas can now receive high-level interventional stroke care and chronic headache care close to home.”

The Joint Commission, an independent, non-for-profit organization, accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations in the United States.

The Southern Nevada hospital system earned the two distinctions after undergoing on-site reviews from the commission Oct. 13 and 14. The commission evaluated clinical programs focusing on three core areas: compliance with consensus-bases national standards, effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

According to St. Rose Dominican, roughly 45 million people in the United States suffer from chronic headaches and about 750,000 people experience either a new or recurrent stroke each year.
