Metro Police union OKs tentative contract with city, county

The union representing Metro Police officers has ratified a tentative two-year contract with Clark County and the city of Las Vegas.

The Police Protective Association represents rank-and-file police and corrections officers who work for Metro and Las Vegas marshals.

The tentative deal applies only to Metro officers and will go before the department’s Fiscal Affairs Committee on Monday for review and possible ratification.

As part of the agreement, there will be no wage adjustments for officers. They will receive a step increase of 1 percent in the first year of the deal, and an increase of 3 percent in the second year, Police Protective Association Executive Director Chris Collins said.

Officers had previously been entitled to step increases of 8 percent over two years, Collins said.

The deal includes cuts in the insurance payments, education allowances and clothing allowances officers receive.

It also eliminates longevity pay for new hires.

Collins said officers have continued to drive down crime over the past few years and are working harder for less pay.

“These men and women are truly law enforcement professionals,” Collins said. “They’re also taxpayers, they’re mothers, they’re fathers. They see that the economy is down, and they’ve met the required givebacks the past three years to help deal with that.”
