Letter to the editor:

Politics needs a dose of humility

A recent Michael Ramirez cartoon exemplifies why our Congress is in gridlock. It “contrasts” Mr. Tea Party with Mr. Occupy Movement. Mr. TP, wearing a sweater with USA on it, waves the flag. Mr. O, wearing a T-shirt that bears the Communist hammer and sickle, carries a “Down with Capitalism” sign. Lists of words next to these caricatures describe one as a law-abiding, America-loving contributor and the other as a vicious, anti-police, America-blaming leech.

You might think this is tongue-in-cheek until you view the caption: “Which one is closer to 99 percent of America?”

This one-sided, stereotyped cartoon is typical of phony, politically motivated attacks. Irrationality such as this is reflective of the polarized mindsets in Congress. America won’t be whole again until citizens send the message that false characterizations and assessments are crippling our democracy.

When you witness trickery and falsehoods, tell the perpetrator, “If you cannot accommodate the whole truth, the complete picture, America as a whole, I cannot support you.” Restoring the old notion that “Honesty is the best policy” would cure a lot of our ills.
