At each year’s Sun Youth Forum, several students are randomly picked to receive $1,000 scholarships. Here are this year’s recipients, their names pulled from a revolving drum.
Whitney Thomas
Palo Verde High School
Clubs/Activities: Ice hockey, National Honors Society and Forensics
College choice: Trinity College
Favorite part of the forum: “Being able to communicate with a wide variety of people from across the county.”
About the scholarship: “I’m so appreciative to have this scholarship to help pay for the universities which I hope to attend.”
Erick Alvarez
Liberty High School
Clubs/Activities: National Honors Society, Key Club and AP Club
College choice: UNLV
Favorite part of the forum: “The fact that we have the opportunity to exchange both opinions and solutions to problems about our community.”
This scholarship means: “I am so grateful to have such an opportunity. It relieves so much stress over how I will pay for college.”
Raudel Perez
Legacy High School
Clubs/Activities: Robotics Club, Track, Cross Country
College choice: UNR
Favorite part of the forum: “The chance to hear from other students from all over on a variety of important topics.”
About the scholarship: “It means I have a chance to be what I want to be, go where I want to go and do what I want to do. This is my step toward a successful life.”
Alexander Robinson
Foothill High School
Clubs/Activities: Band, Varsity Quiz, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta
College choice: Claremont McKenna College
Favorite part of the forum: “Meeting people from around the valley and learning their viewpoints.”
About the scholarship: “It helps pay for my college education, which will enable me to be successful in the future in order to give back to my community.”
Danny Kim
Trinity International School
Clubs/Activities: National Honor Society
College choice: University of Southern California
Favorite part of the forum: “Most students participate in the discussions.”
About the scholarship: “I would say, ‘Thank God.’ It makes me study more and more. My parents will be happy about this.”
