69-year-old woman hit by UPS truck was retired teacher, school volunteer

A 69-year-old woman fatally struck by a UPS truck Tuesday afternoon was a retired elementary school teacher and beloved volunteer, school district officials said.

The Clark County coroner’s office identified her as Margery Louise Gill. She died outside her Henderson home after being hit by the truck in the 2500 block of Swan Ridge Avenue.

Gill retired from Vanderburg Elementary School in 2008 after working in the district for 41 years, district spokeswoman Amanda Fulkerson said.

Despite her retirement, Gill remained a constant fixture at the school as a volunteer, helping wherever she could, Fulkerson said.

“The school is just shaken,” she said. “She was incredibly loved by both the students and staff.”

The accident happened at 3:13 p.m. Tuesday in a residential neighborhood near Wigwam Parkway and Eastern Avenue.

The UPS truck driver, 41-year-old David McCallum, was delivering a package in the neighborhood, Metro Police said. Once back in the truck, he began rolling forward and heard the truck make contact.

Witnesses reported that Gill was crossing Swan Ridge Avenue when the UPS truck hit her, authorities said. She was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Neighbor Kim Adriansen theorizes Gill likely was headed to get her mail at the box across the street — part of the woman’s regular afternoon routine.

Gill would return home from school or church, park her red car and fetch her mail, Adriansen. On weekends, she was known for taking long walks while carrying a bag to pick up trash.

“We have kind neighbors, but Margery was exemplary,” Adriansen said.

Police said the accident investigation is ongoing. The accident marked the 60th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction, 19 of which involved pedestrians, police said.
