The Bureau of Land Management is cautioning drivers to watch out for wild burros on State Route 159.

The Bureau of Land Management is cautioning drivers traveling along State Route 159 to watch out for wild burros in the road.

At least 11 burros have been hit and killed or sustained injuries leading to euthanization in the past year after wandering into the road, officials said.

“This is an area where people tend to feed the burros,” Krystal Johnson, a BLM wild horse and burro specialist, said in a statement. “Now they’re accustomed to being fed, and they hang alongside the road waiting for food. They hear the cars coming and think it’s feeding time.”

People who come across the burros should not feed them, as it is illegal to feed, pet or harass a wild horse or burro. BLM officials said anyone caught doing so will be given a citation and be fined.
