Las Vegas Valley Book Festival to feature 100 authors

Festival includes literary works, plus children’s books and comic books

Three festivals will be rolled into one this weekend for Vegas’ largest literary event, the 10th annual Las Vegas Valley Book Festival.

The main four-day book festival starts Thursday at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St., and will feature 100 authors, 100 events and is expected to welcome 10,000 readers. The festival will continue 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday.

Festival coordinator Eileen Horn said the festival aims to bring authors and avid readers together.

“It’s to encourage literacy, reading and writing with workshops,” Horn said.

The children’s book festival, which Horn says is the most popular part of the weekend for kids and parents, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Fifth Street School. A third part, the comic book festival, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clark County Library, 1401 East Flamingo Road.

Horn said a two-year partnership with the Clark County School District Library Association has allowed the festival to highlight young adult authors this year that will also visit some Clark County schools.

Jay Asher, the author of the New York Times bestseller “Thirteen Reasons Why,” a story about a girl who commits suicide, will visit Chaparral and Rancho High School Friday, Horn said.

The main event Saturday will include panels and workshops for fiction writers, memoir writers and 18 young adult writers. The keynote speaker will be Pulitzer-prize winning author Jane Smiley.

The list of guests include paranormal authors, a subject she said is very relevant in popular culture and books today.

“They are really hot authors,” said Horn. “They are going to discuss writing fantasy, contemporary and combining fantasy and fiction.”
