Sandoval will get 2 bills to prohibit transgender discrimination

CARSON CITY – Despite Republican opposition, two bills to prohibit discrimination against transsexuals in housing and public accommodations cleared the Assembly and are headed to Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Under the proposals, anybody who discriminates or segregates based on gender can be found guilty of a misdemeanor.

A person who feels he or she has been discriminated against can file a complaint with the state Equal Rights Commission.

The bills say “gender identity or expression means a gender-related identity, appearance, expression or behavior of a person, regardless of the person’s assigned sex at birth.”

The vote Monday on both bills was 29-13 with all of the dissenting votes coming from Republicans. There was no debate on Senate Bill 331 or Senate Bill 361.

Already approved was a bill to bar discrimination in employment based on a person’s gender identity or expression. The bill is awaiting the signature of Gov. Brian Sandoval.
