Bill requiring cigarette sellers to post smoking dangers advances

CARSON CITY – On a 14-7 vote, the Senate has approved a bill to require businesses that sell cigarettes to post a sign about the dangers of smoking while pregnant.

A business that fails to post the sign would be fined $100.

State law already indicates a restaurant that sells liquor must post a sign about the dangers of drinking while pregnant.

Assembly Bill 170 now returns to the Assembly for agreement on an amendment.

Voting against the bill in the Senate were Republicans Greg Brower of Reno, and Barbara Cegavske, Michael Roberson and Elizabeth Halseth, all of Las Vegas; Don Gustavson of Sparks, Dean Rhoads of Elko and James Settelmeyer of Minden.
