About 4,000 people attended The Las Vegas Shakespeare Company’s three performances of “The Wizard of Oz” in Henderson last weekend.

Henderson residents still have a chance to catch the show Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Henderson Pavilion, 200 S. Green Valley Parkway.

“The attendance figures were off the charts,” said Dan Decker, the company’s artistic director. “We had big crowds and roaring standing ovations. It’s been a lovefest.”

The local theater performances of the popular children’s movie feature Henderson resident Carly Richardson playing the role of Dorothy Gale. Richardson is a 2008 Green Valley High School graduate who was selected out of 30 other Dorothy hopefuls for the chance to skip down the yellow brick road.

“I’m very thrilled Carly came out to audition,” Decker said. “She has a great voice, is perfect for the part, and has very sharp acting skills.”

Cheeto, a 1-year-old terrier and Chihuahua mix from the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is playing Dorothy’s sidekick, Toto.

The show also stars four people from Opportunity Village, an organization that serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“It’s enlightening for Henderson to make these kinds of cultural events available for residents to enjoy and take pride in,” Decker said.

Tickets cost $10 and may be purchased through www.hendersonlive.com, by calling 702-267-4849 or by visiting the Henderson Pavilion Box office, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
