A North Las Vegas police officer was in serious condition at University Medical Center tonight after being involved in a crash at Carey Avenue and Commerce Street, authorities said.

Police spokesman officer Tim Bedwell said the on-duty officer was riding east at 5:35 p.m. on Carey Avenue, approaching the Commerce Street intersection. A 24-year-old woman in a Chevrolet sedan was headed south and attempted to make a left turn onto Commerce Street, he said.

Both the officer and the woman had a green light, Bedwell said. But the 32-year-old officer, a seven-year veteran of the department, had the right of way, Bedwell said.

The motorcycle hit the right front wheel and fender of the car. The officer was ejected over the car and landed in the road on the other side of the intersection, Bedwell said.

The driver of the car was not injured.

Roads in the area were closed while police investigate.
