KSNV coverage of crash involving a North Las Vegas Police motorcycle officer, May 12, 2011.
A North Las Vegas police officer was in serious condition at University Medical Center tonight after being involved in a crash at Carey Avenue and Commerce Street, authorities said.
Police spokesman officer Tim Bedwell said the on-duty officer was riding east at 5:35 p.m. on Carey Avenue, approaching the Commerce Street intersection. A 24-year-old woman in a Chevrolet sedan was headed south and attempted to make a left turn onto Commerce Street, he said.
Both the officer and the woman had a green light, Bedwell said. But the 32-year-old officer, a seven-year veteran of the department, had the right of way, Bedwell said.
The motorcycle hit the right front wheel and fender of the car. The officer was ejected over the car and landed in the road on the other side of the intersection, Bedwell said.
The driver of the car was not injured.
Roads in the area were closed while police investigate.

3 motorcycle accidents in as many weeks. Where is the review board?
...God bless him, I hope he makes it.
How much do these motorcycles cost to operate compared to typical radio patrol cars? Three accidents with injuries in the past 30 days. Many others throughout the year, year after year.
Police always claim that abuses against civilians are done in the name of "officer safety," yet the police departments operate these motorcycles and continue to have officers suffer serious injuries in accidents that either wouldn't occur or wouldn't be nearly as serious in a crown vic.
If the police departments were as serious about "officer safety" as they claim, they'd disband the motorcycle cops. But that'd be one less status symbol for cops, so I doubt it'll ever happen.
What's up with all the police motorcycle crashes? They need to send them all for retraining at the LAPD or CHP academy.
Maybe I am not understanding this... The officer was headed East on Carey and the woman was headed South on ??(would have to be Commerce) turning left onto Commerce??.. and both had green lights...??
Either way, I hope this officer pulls through.
That's what he gets for giving innocent people tickets.
