LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Unions a crucial thread in fabric of American life

I would like to voice my support for our union brothers and sisters across this country.

My father, an Italian immigrant, walked the picket lines in Detroit in the 1930s. He worked in an auto factory.

He was deaf and had emphysema because of noise and fumes inside the plant. He went on strike not just for money, but also to establish humane working conditions and benefits such as health insurance and pensions. He loved being an American citizen and he loved his union.

It was too late for his health, but he left things better for those who followed.

What’s going on in Wisconsin right now makes me sick. They’re giving tax breaks to corporations and the rich while trying to strip the middle class of the last thing they have, their unions.

Can’t people see what’s going on? If we allow this to happen, our country is doomed.
