Updated Friday, March 4, 2011 | 2:31 p.m.

A 25-year-old New Jersey man committed suicide early Friday by jumping from a ledge at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on the Strip.

Cosmopolitan security officials called Metro Police at 4:42 a.m. reporting that the man was threatening to jump from a fourth-floor ledge on the 51-story building. Officers and police negotiators were dispatched to the scene and made efforts to talk the man out of jumping, police said.

Authorities said he jumped shortly before 6:30 a.m. and was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit, where he was pronounced dead.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on Harmon Avenue from Interstate 15 to Las Vegas Boulevard was closed briefly after the man jumped.

The man's name and hometown weren't immediately made public.
