Debris in an air conditioner started a fire at a house on a golf course Wednesday night, but a couple golfers noticed the blaze and fought it with a garden hose until firefighters arrived, officials said.

The fire was reported at 7:06 p.m. in the 7400 block of Desert Flame Court along the golf course at the Painted Desert Country Club, near U.S. 95 and Ann Road.

According to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, the golfers jumped a fence at the house where they saw flames coming from the garage. One golfer picked up a garden hose and sprayed water into the garage while the other ran across the street and called 911.

Once firefighters arrived, they extinguished the fire in less than five minutes, officials said.

Nobody was home a the time but neighbors notified the occupants, who rushed home and gave firefighters keys to save a car in the garage, officials said.

Investigators determined that pine needles in the compressor unit of the air conditioner caught fire as the unit heated up, officials said. Damage was estimated at $10,000. Nobody was injured.
