Man suffers burn injuries in backyard grilling incident

A 50-year-old man suffered serious burn injuries today after his backyard grill caught fire.

The Clark County Fire Department responded about 3:20 p.m. to a home in the 8200 block of Beaverbrook Way in the south valley.

Officials said gas accumulated in the grill, and when the man tried to light the grill, the top blew off and caused a flash fire that ignited the man’s clothes.

The victim was taken to University Medical Center for treatment of serious burn injuries, officials said.

“This incident is an example of the need to exercise extreme caution when working around barbecue grills,” County Fire Chief Bertral Washington said in a statement.

As temperatures rise and the barbecue season gets under way, officials say the number of grill fires increases. Clark County fire code state that cooking outdoors with a portable barbecue is prohibited within 10 feet of any overhang, balcony or opening. The code also states that storage or use of any portable barbeque is prohibited indoors, above the first story, and within 5 feet of any exterior building wall.
