Rescue team working to help hiker who fell a reported 60 feet

Metro Police's Search and Rescue Team is extracting a hiker who reportedly fell 60 feet from a trail on Mount Charleston Thursday morning.

Metro spokesman Bill Cassell said authorities received a call at 10:49 a.m. indicating that a male had fallen from a hiking trail. The initial reports suggest the hiker fell 60 feet, but authorities have not confirmed that distance.

The incident happened near the Big Falls area on Mount Charleston when the male was possibly hiking with two other people. The victim is believed to be unconscious, Cassell said.

Search and rescue teams are evaluating whether to do a helicopter or ground rescue based on the terrain where the hiker fell, police said.

"It's going to take a little bit of time to get to this individual," Cassell said.

A medical transport helicopter is staged nearby to take the victim to University Medical Center's trauma unit, Cassell said.
