Letter to the editor:

Use adversity to make a positive change in life

I found a hopeful line in a new book called “The Next Convergence,” written by Nobel Prize economist Michael Spence.

Noting the phenomenal rise and newfound wealth of China and India, he wrote that adversity is often the birthplace of successful change.

I got clobbered by the Crash of 2008, but I cut my losses, downsized and moved to Las Vegas. Like everyone, I enjoyed the status quo until it disappeared, so now I drive a Volvo instead of a BMW, live in 1,800 square feet instead of 3,500, and pay cash instead of using a credit card.

As Winston Churchill said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” My new motto is: “Forget the past, look to the future and be realistic.” It’s working for me.
