Scarf-face’ robber gets 14 years for 2009 crimes

A federal judge Friday issued a 14-year prison sentence to a man who pleaded guilty in connection with the armed robberies of a convenience store and wireless store in Las Vegas in December 2009, Nevada's U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden said.

Lonnie Troy, III, 36, of North Las Vegas, was dubbed the "scarf-face" robber because he wore a black scarf over the bottom half of his face during both robberies. Sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Lloyd George, Troy pleaded guilty in February to two counts of interference of commerce by robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm in commission of a crime of violence.

On Dec. 30, 2009, Troy robbed a Metro PCS store on North Pecos Road in Las Vegas. The following day he robbed a Circle K convenience store on Valley View Boulevard in Las Vegas. During both robberies, which occurred about noon, he wore a hooded jacket, gloves and the black scarf over the bottom half of his face as he brandished a chrome-plated long-barrel .45-caliber revolver.

As Troy left both stores, he also wished the clerks “Merry Christmas.”

Troy had three prior felony convictions, including a 2007 federal conviction for unlawful firearms possession.

The case was investigated by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, Metro Police and the North Las Vegas Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nicholas Dickinson and Phillip Smith Jr. handled the prosecution.
