Let’s remember exactly why we need government

Robert Gardner, in his Jan. 6 letter to the editor, wrote: “Polls taken before November show the majority of voters want smaller government with fewer services.”

Exactly what services would voters cut? Police, fire protection, road construction, public school education? What about Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid?

This is a big country with millions of people, so it takes a big government to provide services for its people. When we go to the Department of Motor Vehicles or any other government office, we have to wait in long lines now.

And, also, reflect on what your family depends on from the government before you demand less government. Could you take care of your family without the government? Could you protect your family without the government? We need to pay taxes for what the government provides for us.
