LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Public voted for less government intervention

Upon reading the Las Vegas Sun’s Tuesday editorial, “A Republican ‘plan,’ ” criticizing the Republican House for initiating a bill to repeal the current health care bill, I fail to see the author’s reasoning in concluding that the American people want the government to work. Does he not realize that the people have shown that they want less government intervention?

They don’t want to be forced to comply with a grossly overpriced legislation, which is being forced down their throats by members of Congress who are exempt from its provisions along with other government officials, certain religious groups, labor unions and others. The few commendable provisions are greatly outweighed by its costs of enactment and enforcement while failing to address problems such as tort reform, which greatly impedes medical efficiency.

They see the “fine” job the government has done with Social Security, Medicare, the U.S. Postal Service, Amtrak and other bureaucracies that continue to drain the budget and don’t want health care handled by czars, committees, panels and the like.

They don’t want more government to vote themselves raises during tough economic times, benefiting from “earmarked funds” (also known as pork), and passing legislation sending the deficit into orbit.

The editorial’s author should realize the functions of government are to provide essential services and provide a healthy business environment to improve employment and the economy in general rather than try to create jobs so they can take credit for something.
