Sandoval’s general counsel not a licensed Nevada attorney

CARSON CITY – It’s been a past practice that the general counsel of the governor be a licensed lawyer in Nevada, but not in the administration of Gov. Brian Sandoval.

He named Lucas Foletta to the post. Foletta has yet to take the Nevada Bar examination.

But Foletta says he is a licensed lawyer in California and can act as general counsel to the governor under the rules of the Nevada Supreme Court. Foletta said he intends to take the Nevada Bar exam.

Sandoval probably doesn’t need too much legal help. He was state attorney general, a federal district judge and was in private law practice.

Foletta served as an assistant U.S. attorney prosecuting mortgage fraud and identity theft cases.

He was a law clerk for Sandoval when he was a federal judge.
