North Las Vegas Police identified an officer this morning who fatally shot a man after authorities say he pointed a gun at the officer while he investigated celebratory New Year's gunfire shortly after midnight Saturday.

Authorities said Officer Jeffrey Pollard, 40, noticed gunfire coming from the front yard of a house in the 600 block of East Glendale Avenue while participating in an intensified patrol looking for people shooting guns into the air to celebrate the new year.

The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the man as 32-year-old Fernando Giovanni Sauceda, of North Las Vegas. He died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers saw a large group of people in the front yard and saw numerous guns, including at least one high-powered rifle, police said. The scene became chaotic, and one of the men pointed a handgun at Pollard, prompting the officer to fire several times, killing Sauceda, police said.

Pollard has been with North Las Vegas Police since March 1997. He was placed on routine paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in cases of officer-involved shootings.
