Two people were injured when a fire broke out early New Year’s Day at an apartment building near Lake Mead Drive and Center Street, Henderson Fire Department officials said.

Two civilians suffered non-life threatening injuries, officials said. One was transported to the hospital and the other was treated and released on scene, fire officials said.

The fire, which caused an estimated $200,000 damage, was reported about 12:30 a.m. today at 1100 Center Street. Residents of the three-story apartment building discovered the fire and called 911, officials said.

Everyone escaped the building before firefighters arrived.

The first firefighters got there in about five minutes and found heavy fire and smoke coming from a first-floor apartment and extending up the side of the building, fire officials said.

A second-alarm was requested from the Clark County Fire Department. It took crews about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Two apartments were heavily damage, and all eight units sustained smoke damage, offcials said. A total of 16 people were displaced from their homes and assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
