More changes coming for Interstate 15 commuters

If you want to get to southbound Interstate 15 from the Las Vegas Beltway, your route will change tomorrow.

The next section of access roads along I-15 is scheduled to open Thursday morning.

The new configuration will make motorists going south on I-15 from the beltway drive on the access roads past Blue Diamond Road before entering the main part of the freeway.

It may seem like a long way to go to move from one freeway to another, but traffic planners say the access roads, which they call collector-distributor roads, will help traffic move more quickly and safely, because it eliminates some of the weaving as motorists move across lanes.

The access road has two or three lanes depending on the area, but the speed limit is only 45 mph.

As construction on the I-15 project continues, motorists will be able to get to westbound Blue Diamond Road from the new access roads, but to get from the beltway to eastbound Blue Diamond and Windmill Lane, you will have to take Las Vegas Boulevard or Decatur Boulevard.

The transition to the new access road will close some ramps tonight.

The connection between the beltway and southbound I-15 and the ramp from southbound I-15 to Blue Diamond will be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., officials said.

The access roads are part of the I-15 Design-Build South Project, which is widening the freeway from Blue Diamond Road to Tropicana Avenue.
