Excessive heat warning continues, with record 111 degrees expected for Las Vegas

High heat warning to last through Saturday night for region

Find some air conditioning and keep the cold drinks coming — temperatures are expected to hit a record-high 111 degrees today in Las Vegas, according to the National Weather Service.

The Las Vegas Valley is expected to have mostly sunny skies today, with highs ranging from around 105 degrees on the west side of the valley to around 114 degrees on the east side.

The weather service is continuing its excessive heat warning through Saturday for the Las Vegas area, which set a new temperature record for Tuesday’s date, soaring to 110 degrees.

Highs this week are expected to be 110 Thursday, 109 Friday and 108 Saturday, forecasters said.

The excessive heat warning has been issued to areas below 4,000 feet and remains in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday, the weather service said.

Expected temperatures will be 108 to 113 degrees in Las Vegas, 113 to 117 in Lake Mead and Laughlin, 117 to 122 in Death Valley, 107 to 11 in Twentynine Palms, 112 to 117 at Lake Havasu City and 103 to 106 at Kingman. Overnight lows will drop to between only 85 and 90 degrees for many locations, forecasters said.

The hottest temperatures will occur within the Colorado River Valley and Death Valley National Park, they said. They suggested planning any outdoor activities in the early morning or in the evening after sunset.

An excessive heat warning is issued when temperatures are forecast to reach dangerous levels that will stress the body if precautions aren’t taken, forecasters said.

They suggested taking extra precautions if you work or spend time outside and be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. They also recommended wearing light-weight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drinking plenty of water.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded place. If you think someone is suffering from heat stroke, call 911, they advised.

Las Vegas set a record high for Tuesday’s date, when the temperature reached 110 degrees at 3:10 p.m. The previous high for Tuesday's date was 109 degrees, set in 1998 and 1944.

At 4:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 87 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 78 degrees. The record low was 56 degrees, set in 1968.

Around the valley just before 5 a.m., temperatures were 85 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 80 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 85 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 93 degrees by 9 a.m., to 104 degrees by noon and reach a high of 111 degrees by 4 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 101 degrees and the record high was 110 degrees, set in 1985.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 110 degrees by 6 p.m., to 103 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 96 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Thursday's morning low will be 87 degrees and Thursday's high will climb to 109 degrees, they said.
