North Las Vegas Acting City Manager Maryann Ustick has accepted an offer to become the city manager of Destin, Fla., pending the negotiation of a contract.
Ustick was chosen from among six candidates at a Destin City Council meeting Monday night. A North Las Vegas spokeswoman said Ustick has accepted the position.
Ustick has been the acting city manager of North Las Vegas since 2009, and has overseen the city’s operations during tough economic times. The city is struggling to close a multimillion-dollar budget gap and is facing a possible takeover by the state.
Accepting the job in Destin, which has a population of about 12,000, would mean moving to a much smaller locale than North Las Vegas. Ustick previously worked in the city manager’s office of Pensacola, Fla., about an hour away from Destin.
If Ustick leaves for Florida, it will be the second major departure in the city’s government this summer. In July, former City Attorney Nicholas Vaskov resigned, citing the city’s “political environment.”
