Metro Police halt jail visits, cite ‘safety’ issue

Las Vegas police say family visitation and in-house inmate programs have been suspended at the downtown Clark County Detention Center due to what a statement calls "contraband and other safety concerns."

Police Officer Bill Cassell tells The Associated Press the order was put in effect Monday and is expected to last until Friday.

Cassell says telephone service isn't interrupted for the 3,200 inmates at the 12-story jail.

He says official business, including attorney visits, aren't affected.

Cassell is a department spokesman. He wouldn't specify the nature of the safety concern or the contraband cited in the order.
