Excessive heat heading to Las Vegas area

Highs to climb to around 108 to 113 in Las Vegas on Wednesday, forecasters say

It’s going to be one of the hottest weeks of the summer for Las Vegas — an excessive heat watch has been issued for the area for the middle of the week, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat watch is for elevations below 4,000 feet for portions of southern Nevada, southeast California and northwest Arizona, which is in effect from late Wednesday morning through Thursday evening, the weather service said.

Temperatures are expected to climb to 108 to 113 degrees in Las Vegas, 112 to 117 at Lake Mead and Laughlin, 116 to 122 at Death Valley, 108 to 112 at Twentynine Palms, 112 to 117 at Lake Havasu City and 102 to 106 in Kingman.

The hottest temperatures will occur within the Colorado River Valley and Death Valley National Park, forecasters said. They recommended planning any outdoor activities in the early morning or in the evening after sunset.

An excessive heat watch means that a prolonged period of hot temperatures is expected, forecasters said. The hot temperatures will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible, they said. They recommended drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air conditioning and out of the sun. The also recommended checking on relatives and neighbors.

Today’s high temperatures will range from 97 degrees on the west side of the valley to around 107 degrees on the east side, forecasters said.

At 4:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 84 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 79 degrees. The record low was 60 degrees, set in 1968.

Around the valley just before 5 a.m., temperatures were 79 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 79 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 79 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures at McCarran were to rise today to 90 degrees by 9 a.m., to 100 degrees by noon and reach a high of 105 degrees by 3 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 101 degrees and the record high was 110 degrees, set in 1939.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 104 degrees by 6 p.m., to 96 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 90 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Tuesday's morning low will be 82 degrees and Tuesday's high will climb to 108 degrees, they said.
