Letter to the editor:

A way for Buffett to pay more taxes

The short, simple answer to Warren Buffett’s complaint that he doesn’t pay enough taxes is, “Mr. Buffett, write the check!”

But let’s look at Buffett’s complaint that he pays a lower tax rate than his hired help. That may be because most of his income comes not from salary but from long-term capital gains, which are taxed at a lower rate. If so, that’s his decision. Mr. Buffett could just as easily pay himself all salary and pay the same rate as his salaried staff.

If Mr. Buffett’s conscience is bothering him, maybe he should advocate lowering the income tax rate on salaries to the same rate he pays on his investment income.
