Suspected car thief arrested after police chase, 3 crashes

A Tuesday morning vehicle theft east of the Las Vegas Strip preceded a police chase and three crashes, including one that landed the suspect in the hospital.

Metro Police were called at 7:35 a.m. by a citizen whose vehicle was struck by a car leaving the Ellis Island Casino, 4178 Koval Lane, near Flamingo Road.

Moments later another person called police to report that her car had been stolen, Officer Laura Meltzer said. Police believe the person who stole the car hit the other vehicle while fleeing from the area.

Officers patrolling Desert Inn Road spotted the stolen car a few minutes later and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver wouldn't pull over, Meltzer said.

Police followed the car, which ran a red light at the intersection of Desert Inn Road and Swenson Street, then collided with another car, Meltzer said.

The vehicle then continued north on Joe W. Brown Drive, where it crashed into a wall, “conveniently right by our Convention Center Command,” Meltzer said.

The suspected car thief was arrested at the scene and taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries, although Meltzer wasn’t sure of the extent of his injuries. Police didn't identify the man this morning.

No one from the previous two crashes was taken to the hospital, Meltzer said.
