Work to repair Interstate 15 where a fuel truck exploded last week will begin Tuesday night, the Nevada Department of Transportation announced today.

Three southbound lanes of the freeway were damaged Wednesday morning when a truck carrying 9,100 gallons of fuel rolled and exploded near Lake Mead Boulevard.

Southbound I-15 was shut down for about 11 hours as crews cleaned up the mess and made emergency repairs to the road.

Workers will return this week to make permanent repairs, including repaving the road, adjusting a manhole and restriping lanes.

The transportation department has hired Las Vegas Paving to make the repairs over three nights this week.

Some of the southbound lanes of the freeway and the east Lake Mead Boulevard on-ramp to the freeway will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, transportation officials said.

Crews will repave two lanes of the freeway Tuesday night, three lanes Wednesday night and will do utility adjustments Thursday night. Workers will return next week to restripe the road.

Las Vegas Paving will be performing the work on the $118,000 project.

The transportation department is paying for the repairs so they get done quickly, but will be negotiating with the trucking company to be reimbursed for the cleanup and repairs once the investigation is complete, a spokesman said.
