Flashing yellow turn arrow signals are being installed in Henderson and around the valley. The new signals will replace the older, more confusing models, like this one.

Flashing yellow turn arrow signals, such as this one, are being installed the Las Vegas Valley.

Drivers are being asked to take extra caution at two intersections in Las Vegas that will start displaying flashing yellow arrows to yield at left turns.

The yellow arrows will operate starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Alta and Town Center drives and the intersection of Smoke Ranch and Decatur avenues.

City spokeswoman Diana Paul said instead of a green circle for yield, drivers will see a flashing yellow arrow that city officials hope will make drivers more cautious of turning. A national study shows intersections with flashing yellow left-turn arrows recorded fewer crashes.

“Crash data showed a lot of left turn accidents at the two intersections and we wanted to see if it would reduce them,” Paul said.

The new lights are part of a pilot program implemented around the valley by the Regional Transportation Commission, the Nevada Department of Transportation and local government agencies. The program will be monitored for six months before other streets in the city switch to the yellow left-turn yield arrows.

The city is urging drivers to turn with caution while they become familiar with the new lights.
