California man, 49, drowns in Lake Mohave

Map

A man who drowned Sunday at Lake Mohave was identified today as 49-year-old Matthew Santistevan, of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

National Park Service rangers were notified after Santistevan was pulled ashore by friends who found him in the water.

Officials said he was with his wife and several friends at Newberry Cove, where they had beached their boat. Santistevan, who wasn't wearing a life jacket, then left the beach and went wading. After a few minutes, his friends noticed he was missing and found him unresponsive in 6 to 10 feet of water, officials said.

Rangers and paramedics arrived and continued CPR, but Santistevan was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:15 p.m. Sunday.

The incident remains under investigation by the Park Service. The Clark County Coroner's Office is conducting an autopsy.
