Letter to the editor:

Drowning in the quest to please everyone

Hearing so many people weigh in on the debt-ceiling limit legislation — pro and con — reminds me of a story I heard years ago:

A man, his son and their donkey were walking to market when they encountered a passer-by who suggested it was foolish for both of them to walk when they had a strong animal, so the father climbed on.

Before long they met another passer-by who asked why the big, strong man was riding while his young son walked, so both the father and son mounted the beast.

A mile down the road they crossed a dilapidated wooden bridge and the concentrated weight of the three of them caused the bridge to collapse. The man and his son swam to safety, but the donkey drowned.

The moral: If you try to please everyone, you lose your ass.
