National Park Service officials believe they have found the body of a Las Vegas swimmer who went missing Thursday night in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

The 40-year-old man went under the water while swimming in a cove in an area known as The Narrows. At about 9:45 a.m. Friday, park rangers found a body matching the missing man's description near the shore in about 1 to 2 feet of water in Boulder Wash Cove, just east of The Narrows.

Park rangers began searching the area at 9:19 p.m. Thursday when a witness said the man jumped off their boat as they were in a cove. A few minutes later the man screamed that he was drowning, officials said. His friend threw a rope out but the man went under the water and never resurfaced.

He was described as Hispanic and 5-feet-3-inches tall, 140 pounds and was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, and white and blue checkered shorts. He also has a 1963 Chevrolet classic tattoo on his back.

The man's friend said he was intoxicated at the time and wasn't wearing a life jacket. Rangers don't suspect foul play.

The Park Service is working with the Clark County Coroner’s Office to recover the body and the coroner’s office will identify him.
