Expectant clouds hang over Las Vegas on Tuesday, August 2, 2011.

Keep your umbrella handy today — scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and persist through the evening in the Las Vegas Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

Isolated severe weather and flash flooding are possible, the weather service said.

Thunderstorm chances will be limited to areas near and east of Las Vegas on Wednesday as drier air moves in, forecasters sad.

Afternoon high temperatures are expected to range today from 98 degrees on the west side of the valley to around 104 on the east side, forecasters said.

At 5:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 83 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 81 degrees. The record low was 55 degrees, set in 1937.

Around the valley just before 6 a.m., temperatures were 84 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 83 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 84 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures at McCarran were to rise today to 90 degrees by 9 a.m., to 98 degrees by noon and reach a high of 102 degrees by 3 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 104 degrees and the record high was 115 degrees, set in 1979 and 1977.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 100 degrees by 6 p.m., to 94 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 89 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Wednesday's morning low will be 85 degrees and Wednesday's high will climb to 104 degrees, they said.
