A 1-year-old boy drowned Wednesday afternoon in a backyard swimming pool at a house west of downtown Las Vegas, Metro Police said.
Authorities said the drowning occurred in the 1900 block of Fontana Avenue, near Rancho Drive and Alta Drive. Police spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said the boy's mother told police she took her eyes off the child for about five minutes, then found him in the pool.
The mother took the boy to Valley Hospital Medical Center in critical condition, but the child later died, police said.
Meltzer said other adults also were at the home at the time of the drowning.
The Clark County Coroner's Office will release the boy's name.
