Las Vegas to sizzle at 102 degrees today

Record temperatures warming up Southern Nevada

Keep the record books out — Las Vegas is expected to tie another high-temperature mark this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Today's high is expected to climb to 102 degrees, a peak temperature not seen in Las Vegas on today's date in 32 years, the weather service said.

Las Vegas tied a high temperature record on Tuesday, when the thermometer reading topped out at 103 degrees at 2:23 p.m. at McCarran International Airport. The last time it was that hot on Tuesday's date was in 1978.

The hot weather is being driven by a strong ridge of high pressure that will continue to provide record to near-record temperatures Thursday, forecasters said.

A low pressure system west of San Diego will bring a southerly flow of air with limited moisture to the region Thursday through the weekend, they said.

At 4:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 76 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 64 degrees. The record low was 51 degrees, set in 1940.

Around the valley just before 5 a.m., temperatures were 75 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 72 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 73 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 86 degrees by 9 a.m., to 97 degrees by noon and reach a high of 102 degrees by 3 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 89 degrees and the record high was 102 degrees, set in 1978.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 99 degrees by 6 p.m., to 89 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 84 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Thursday's morning low will be 77 degrees and Thursday's high will climb to 99 degrees, they said.
