This weekend Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen will help kick off the 2010 Fireball Run Adventurally and Race to Recover America’s Missing Children.

The Fireball Run is an 18-city, eight-day event in which teams of drivers take part in challenges and distribute leaflets about missing children. Hafen will be taking part in the 3,500-mile drive across the country, which kicks off Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in Henderson.

Each team, which must include either one business owner or a corporate-level businessperson, sponsors a missing child from their region, canvassing the country with the child’s picture in an effort to find him or her. Since the group started in 2007, more than 30 kids have been found as a result.

Hafen will be representing Everlyse Cabrera, who disappeared from North Las Vegas in June 2006.

This year, 82 people are participating in the event, driving in cars full of two to four participants, said Henderson spokeswoman Kathy Blaha. The event will make stops in Williams, Ariz., Gallup N.M., and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, among other cities.

The mayor will be driving a Chevrolet pickup truck, Blaha said.

At the event on Water Street in downtown Henderson, Councilwoman Gerri Schroder will wave the green flag and start the race at 9:30 a.m.

Next week, Blaha said, residents can track Hafen’s progress across the country at www.cityofhenderson.com.
