A Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist was arrested in Las Vegas for allegedly driving drunk Saturday night on his way home from a state newspaper awards ceremony in Pahrump.
Metro Police said John L. Smith was arrested shortly before midnight in connection with drunken driving and an unsafe lane change. He was booked into the Las Vegas City Detention Center, officials said.
Police said a motorcycle officer pulled Smith's car over after observing him swerving in the area of U.S. 95 and Ann Road.
The results for his blood-alcohol test haven't been released.
Smith's columns appear in the R-J on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

hahahahah
RJ's karma is a b!@#$. Maybe Righthaven will defend you, for $75k.
I'll bet the Sun just couldn't wait to run this story. The bickering between these two papers is so ridiculous.
Real class there sevenhills.
Unfortunate. Mr. Smith is a very good writer, and he's home grown. And he's done a lot of good for the community. Just glad no one got hurt. Mr. Smith's article on Sunday about Maddy Graves is one of the best he's ever written in my opinion.
Maybe he won't be so judgmental about other people now.
I don't think it's "karma" or anything else but poor judgement on the part of Mr. Smith. I'm not a reader of his anymore because I think his column has lost a lot its punch. But I am disturbed that anyone drives under the influence. I'm not sure if that because it was John L. Smith that it's news, but Mr. Smith should have known better not because of his standing in the community, but because of the danger to you and me that is the potential of a drunk driver. It's just plain irresponsible.
Crap happens. Pay your fine, attend your drunk class, and make sure it never happens again.
What goes around comes around.
Troubles come in 3. Smith is no exception. Bankruptcy. Liberalism. DUI. All self-inflicted. I guess Smith is so full of himself he believes he is above the law. There is no excuse nor any reason to drink & drive. NONE!
The bad news is that he was at a state newspaper awards ceremony in Pahrump. If that won't make you have a few drinks, nothing will. John Smith seems to be a good man, I hope he learns from this experience.
Maybe the RJ will make him the "Road Warrior"
Hehe..
:-)
I wonder how many of the people posting here have never made a mistake. They must be perfect. Also, I detect a hint of Republicanism. Have you attacked John Ensign for violating commandments and possibly the law? David Vitter for seeking out prostitutes? Larry Craig for getting caught in an activity he dismissed as illegal? I'm sure you don't get the point, because that would require you to have morals and a conscience.
One correction: LVfacts101, besides your stupid comment about liberalism, try reading about WHY Smith filed for bankruptcy.
I'm pretty sure that's an alias.
I see an awful lot of compassionate conservatives here today. what's the matter? the RJ site down?
Remember, always take the Old Lady to drive home. If you don't have one, rent one. Sure a lot cheaper than a DUI. Done it many times when I was "tired." I refuse to go to anything late at night alone. Boring, but 10 Grand is a lot worse than maybe 500 bucks for a Rent a Chick. Take it from a Vet of the DUI wars.
Oh, and always carry a pillow, a blanket, and some H2O in the back seat. Have a good time, and if alone, put in quality "sack time" in the back seat. Again, it has worked for me for years.
This misdemeanor will not change my love for John L. Smith, his courage in writing, nor will it stop me from thanking him for 25 years of superb writing. John L. Smith was driven into bankruptcy by a slander suit, he shaves his head every year to raise money for cancer research, he has had death threats. I don't drink so I can't say I've ever had too many and made the same mistake, but most everyone I know has made this particular mistake, the unfortunate get caught. My only hope is that John Watkins, Bill Terry, Tom Pitaro, and other legends of criminal defense will come to his aid. JLS can write better intoxicated than any Sun columnist can stone cold sober. Feel free to barrage me with comments that get forwarded to my gmail, I simply delete them.
Ha what a drunk idiot!
Stay off the road you drunk.
Steve Wynn should be loving this!
Mr John L. Smith driving intoxicated could have seriously injured someone turning them into a paraplegic like Kirk Henry. It appears our fire and brimstone reporter is no saint after all.
John Smith.... Karma is a b#$ch!... Its time to sober up mate and look at your road ahead... Driving in a straight line, with no more one sided stories dictated by attorneys that have no other way of winning their case other than slandering innocent hard working people!!!! Although being happy when someone else falls is not my style... I cant help but grin remembering the pain I felt when I read your "facts" about my case! I hope the Review Journal finds an objective replacement, a reporter that does not present danger to those who walk/drive by him and has no connection with attorneys with great imagination and writing skills. PS... DUI is a crime!!! that can not be acceptable even in Vegas!!! A city that never sleeps, a city that attorneys can decide what a reporter writes, and what "crimes" the police will investigate because it fits his case needs.
Chunky says:
Nice comment SevenHills! You stole the words right off of Chunky's keyboard and beat him to it! Maybe Righthaven / Gibson could toss the DUI defense in pro-bono?
That's what Chunky thinks!
John L. Smith is a good man---everyone can make a mistake, and we do not have all the facts yet. All you trolls making the ignorant comments here, get a life! Connecting political commentary with this incident is illogical. . .oh wait a minute. . .forgot! That's what you guys do---give it a rest.
