GOP, nonpartisans outpace Democrats in new online registration

More Clark County residents have used the state's new online voter registration to sign up to vote as Republicans, with Democrats finishing third, behind nonpartisans, according to the Nevada Secretary of State's office.

When Secretary of State Ross Miller announced that Clark County residents could register to vote online, the conspiracy-minded muttered that it was part of an effort by the Democratic election officer to help Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Since launching Sept. 1, 242 Clark County residents have registered as Republicans online.

That was followed by 232 registering as nonpartisans; 170 as Democrats and 55 with the conservative Independent American Party.

Including smaller third parties, there have been 733 online registration in Clark County.

It's about 15-20 percent of total new registrations in Clark County since launching, according to Matt Griffin, elections deputy at the Secretary of State's office.

Republicans utilizing the online registration more than Democrats "is consistent with what we've seen in other states," Griffin said.

Clark County was the only county with the information technology resources to implement online voter registration, Griffin said.

The Secretary of State's office hopes to have the service available statewide by 2012. Only eight other states offer online voter registration.
