Acting Henderson city clerk gets nod for position

Sabrina Mercadante has been sworn in as Henderson’s city clerk after serving as acting city clerk for the past six weeks.

Mercadante replaced Monica Martinez Simmons, who was city clerk for 12 years. Simmons had worked for the city for 31 years.

Simmons’ term officially ended July 8. At the July 8 council meeting, the mayor and council voted to give Mercadante a trial period, appointing her as “acting city manager” to make sure she was prepared to take over the position. They officially appointed her for the position at their Tuesday meeting.

The city clerk’s responsibilities include historical records preservation and voter and election services administration, officials said.

Mercadante, who was the manager of council and commission services, was set to fill Simmons’ position as part of the city’s succession plan. She has worked for the city for 10 years.

Mercadante will earn $135,000 a year in her new position.
