Boulder City manager’s ‘professional competence’ at issue in special meeting

The Boulder City Council has set a special public meeting at 8 a.m. Sept. 9 to discuss the controversy surrounding City Manager Vicki Mayes registering a vehicle in Montana and a review of Mayes’s job performance.

The performance review will evaluate “the character, allegations of misconduct and professional competence of the city manager,” the meeting’s agenda stated. At the request of council member Linda Strickland, the council also will consider disciplinary action against Mayes, which could include firing her.

KLAS-TV reported last month that Mayes, who makes $179,000 annually, and her husband registered a 2010 Nissan GT-R worth $83,000 under an LLC in the state of Montana.

Mayes defended the decision, saying she and her husband consulted an attorney and believed the registration was legally sound. Following the media reports, however, she announced that she intended to register the sports car in Nevada.

A 2010 car worth $83,000 and registered in Clark County would incur about $1,500 in licensing fees, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles’ website.
