Boulder City manager’s ‘professional competence’ at issue in special meeting
Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 | 4:27 p.m.
The Boulder City Council has set a special public meeting at 8 a.m. Sept. 9 to discuss the controversy surrounding City Manager Vicki Mayes registering a vehicle in Montana and a review of Mayes’s job performance.
The performance review will evaluate “the character, allegations of misconduct and professional competence of the city manager,” the meeting’s agenda stated. At the request of council member Linda Strickland, the council also will consider disciplinary action against Mayes, which could include firing her.
KLAS-TV reported last month that Mayes, who makes $179,000 annually, and her husband registered a 2010 Nissan GT-R worth $83,000 under an LLC in the state of Montana.
Mayes defended the decision, saying she and her husband consulted an attorney and believed the registration was legally sound. Following the media reports, however, she announced that she intended to register the sports car in Nevada.
A 2010 car worth $83,000 and registered in Clark County would incur about $1,500 in licensing fees, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles’ website.

What about the insurance on this vehicle. Nevada law requires that the policy MUST be written for Nevada by a company licensed in Nevada. How much lost revenue results in the scofflaws not having Nevada insurance on their out of state registered vehicles?
She is making 179,000 a year and they are too stingy to pay a 1,500 registration fee. What a stupid move, attorney advice or not. Are these the kind of decisions she makes for the city? What a joke... FIRE HER.
Tough to be a public employee these days. Every move is heavily scrutinized, especially at her level. If your neighbor did this, he'd be considered shrewd... but for her, the lynch mob is mobilizing.
BTW... considering the professional competence, etc. is standard language, which allows the board to recess into closed session to discuss absent the rabble, rabble
of the mob. Fear not though, any decision or motions need to be made in open session.
@smartone618
I would not call my neighbor shrewd... I would call them a cheater. As far as the city manger goes... I hold them to a higher standard because they are suppose to unhold the laws. Plus this is tax revenue. Don't like the tax then have the law changed, but don't whine when you choose to break the law and get caught.
Did she pay sales tax to nevada on this car purchase or did she avoid that too
I would consider my neighbor a crook if she did this. I paid my share of fees/taxes when purchasing rvs and cars, why doesn't my neighbor have to? Besides, the money from registering the vehicle goes to your city & state for roads, schools and who knows what else. Why would you gyp the system?
By the way, this is one of the oldest tricks (registering out of state) in the book. I can remember people getting busted for it over 30 yrs ago. She may want to consult an attny that knows the Nevada laws just to be safe next time. It is legal in MT, but not NV.
Its time for Mayes to go. She's had a good run. Now let's hire someone at a wage thats actually deserved, oh and maybe they can be competent too.
For smartone618 Every move scrutinized ?? If that was the case she would of been fired a long time ago. She effectively dodged over 8,000 in Sales tax, which the city gets part of. The city leases, who does pay, and why are people allowed to go months sometimes years without paying, the City at least. Lets run down the list, The Solar Plant that owes 3 million, Hangtime Sports, who never paid anything but 25 k after Chandler and Strickland raised heck about it. A few months ago it was brought up that the Zip line company had not paid in 9 months, The Motocross track, no payment for who knows how long, The Restaurant at the Golf course there for at least 6 months without paying. I rest my case.
These boots are made for walking and thats just what they'll do , cuz when the meetings over these boots will walk on without due. Anyone who has had the comical experience of seeing this woman knows what that statement means.
So there is this mosque in New York that these peaceful muslims want to build. They have every legal right to build it, but it's just not good PR to do it. Case in point
