Accident involving Metro motorcycle officer

A Metro Police motorcycle officer suffered minor injuries Saturday evening in a collision with a car at Maryland Parkway and Katie Avenue, authorities said.

The 43-year-old officer, whose name was not released, was taken to University Medical Center for treatment and was later released, police said.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate the car, a 2009 Ford Fusion, was headed north on Maryland, turning left onto Katie, and the police motorcycle was southbound on Maryland, police said. The driver of the car did not see the motorcycle and turned in front of it, causing the motorcycle to hit the the left front of the car, police said.

The officer was knocked down and skidded about 60 feet with the motorcycle, Metro Sgt. Richard Strader said. He said the motorcycle officer applied his brakes before the crash.

The driver of the car, Savannah Hooks, 19, of Las Vegas was not injured. Police are still investigating the accident, which occurred about 6 p.m. near the Boulevard Mall. The crash shut down the intersection for more than two hours.
