Lane closures in airport tunnel could cause delays

Airport tunnel

New lane closures in the Airport Connector Tunnel may delay motorists nightly for the next month.

Lanes in the tunnel will be reduced nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Sunday and continuing for about a month, McCarran International Airport officials announced Friday.

The closures will begin in the southbound tunnel and move to the northbound tunnel in two or three weeks, officials said.

The closures are separate from the current lane restrictions in the northbound tunnel.

The new project is to make improvements to the tunnel’s radio rebroadcasting system, which helps first responders in the event of car crashes or other safety issues in the tunnel, McCarran spokesman Chris Jones said.

The work will be restricted to the overnight hours when traffic in the tunnel is light to minimize the impact on motorists, Jones said.

The existing lane closure in the northbound tunnel is part of a separate project to prepare the airport’s roads for the opening of the new Terminal 3 in 2012.
